Weights, Measures, and Conversions

Because I am based in the UK and do my cooking with UK-based measurements (grams and, if I'm cooking from a recipe from my mum, ounces) and temperatures (Celsius, not Fahrenheit) I often find myself searching for conversions from one to the other.

This will serve as a resource to me and, hopefully, other people who visit. Conversions are not going to be completely accurate, but if you follow one measurement or the other, it should end up fine.

Oven Temperatures

These are approximate conversions; there may be a difference of one to two degrees simply because values don't exactly line up

110°C = 225°F = Gas 1/4
120°C = 250°F = Gas 1/2
135°C = 275°F = Gas 1
150°C = 300°F = Gas 2
162°C = 375°F = Gas 3
175°C = 350°F = Gas 4
190°C = 375°F = Gas 5
200°C = 400°F = Gas 6
220°C = 425°F = Gas 7
230°C = 450°F = Gas 8
245°C = 475°F = Gas 9
260°C = 500°F = Gas 10

Liquid Measurements

Conversions between ml, fluid ounces, and spoons/cups. Like converting between grams and ounces, to get an accurate reading divide ml by 29.6 to get fluid ounces, or multiply fluid ounces by 29.6.

5ml = 1 teaspoon = 1/6 fl. oz
15ml = 1 UK tablespoon = 1/2 fl. oz
20ml = 1 Aus tablespoon = 2/3 fl. oz (all recipes are marked using UK tablespoons so any Aus readers should substitute 3 tsp for 1 tbsp)
60ml = 1/4 cup = 2 fl. oz
70ml = 1/3 cup
120ml = 1/2 cup = 4 fl. oz
140ml = 2/3 cuo
180ml = 3/4 cup
240ml = 1 cup = 8 fl. oz
480ml = 2 cups = 16 fl. oz
960ml = 4 cups

Dry Measurements

These are for level measures and are approximations. To get an actual conversion divide grams by 28.3495 to get ounces, or multiply ounces by 28.3495 to get grams. If your scales do increments of 2 or 5 choose the nearest measurement (e.g. 57g would be 55g or 56g; 113g would be 115g or 114g)

15g = 1/2oz
20g = 2/3oz
30g = 1oz
57g = 2oz
85g = 3oz
113g = 4oz = 1/4lb
142g = 5oz
170g = 6oz
198g = 7oz
227g = 8oz = 1/2lb
255g = 9oz
284g = 10oz
340g = 12oz = 3/4lb
454g = 16oz = 1lb
1,000g = 1kg = 35lb = 2.2lb
